Association Cup Round 3 - Tuesday 12th November - WTFC vs Wombwell Main Dev
Wombwell Town start a four home game run with a 7:45pm kick off against local rivals Wombwell Main Development in the Association Cup 3rd Round.
Manager Karl Rose will be hoping to have some of the nine players injured for the AFC Dronfield match back in the squad.
Bartosz Roda also looks set to make his return debut after a brief spell away from the Club this season. Lee Jordan who played at Handsworth in the League Cup game which was eventually struck from the record books could also be named in the 16.
The evening is dedicated to the hard working volunteers of the Samaritans in Barnsley who will be visiting us to help make everyone aware of the charity and what they strive they achieve.
Everyone at the Club were saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Angel. Pete was a much loved member of the Wombwell Main community having turned out for the football and cricket teams before retiring, and continuing as a valued member of the Club. We would like to ask everyone to respect the minute's silence prior to kick off.
Match Report: Comeback Sees Wellers Through
A three minute salvo around the hour mark saw Wombwell Town come from behind to beat their local rivals in the Association Cup.
Gareth McDermott became the hero of the night scoring a brace on 59 and 62 minutes to see the Wellers into the Quarter Finals.
The game started brightly with Brad Kerr making a surging run down the left after four minutes which resulted in Steven Crossland saving for a corner.
Three mintues later and Joe Oliver combined with Captain Luke Exley with the former clipping the post as the ball went out for a goal kick.
It was Wombwell Main's turn to strike the frame of the goal on ten minutes, but again the effort hit the post and went out of play.
The action died down until the 25th minute when a Kerr free-kick was saved comfortably by Crossland, but from the wind-assisted kick up field it fell kindly for a Main player and despite Bartosz Roda's best efforts the ball found its way into the net.
A long ball forward on 59 minutes found McDermott free on the left wing and having beaten the offside trap the forward corrected his body and shot past Crossland into the far corner of the net for the equaliser.
The winning goal came three minutes later from a Ryan Smith free-kick from the right hand side. Crossland punched the ball straight up in the air and McDermott leapt higher the opposition and looped the ball over the stranded keeper for a rare headed goal.
Luke Needham had replaced Joe Oliver at half time to make his comeback from injury, but it was short-lived when a challenge from Main's Scott Smith saw Needham carried from the pitch with what looked like a serious knee injury on 66 minutes.
A scrappy affair then ensued with few chances, but Roda became the hero on 85 minutes pulling off a terrific save to deny Main an equaliser and they tried to turn in a shot from a right wing cross.
Despite seven minutes of added time Wombwell Main Development couldn't find a way through to force the game to extra time.
Match Result: WTFC 2-1 Wombwell Main Development.
