Association Cup Quarter Final - Saturday 11th January - Staveley MW Res vs WTFC
Wombwell Town bowed out of this season's Association Cup after coming up against a good, young Staveley MW Reserve side at Inkersall Road.
With Sam Severn, Ryan Smith, Peter Bartleson and Chris Byrnes missing from the squad it left manager Karl Rose little option but to name himself in the starting XI for the second time this season.
Despite the under-strength side, it was the visitors who were on the attack first when a cross from Will Harling after five minutes was met by Brad Kerr whose header struck the post and went off for a goal kick.
Staveley keeper Oliver Winfield was forced into a save on 12 minutes with Kerr on the break away into the box. After beating his defender the keeper got down low to deny the shot and concede a corner.
A minutes later and it was Sam Leigh's turn to deny a goal when he used his experience to push the ball wide for a corner.
Leigh was forced into a another save on 29 minutes when he tipped over a speculative shot from the left wing, which may have caught another keeper out.
Disaster struck for Wombwell on the half hour following their own corner. Harling put the ball into the box and the clearance fell to Rose. His initial shot from the edge of the area was blocked and on its return the former Barnsley and Scarborough man tried to play the ball back to Jake Padgett, only for the Staveley man to nip in at pace, steal possession, run into attack, round Leigh who was on his own and tuck the ball into an empty net.
Staveley doubled their lead seven minutes later with their pace up front causing the problem once again with Craig Hart beaten at right back for the cross from the left put in at the near post from close range.
At half time Rose decided to substitute himself to put something different up front in Joe Oliver, with Luke Norbury moving into defence.
On 50 minutes Gareth McDermott was put on the break down the left and his ball to Kerr saw the striker thump the post for a second time before seeing the ball cleared for a corner.
It was nearly 3-0 on 54 minutes as Padgett was beaten at left back, the cross came in but captain Luke Exley was there to get a touch on the ball. However, the ball was heading to the top corner of his own net before Leigh intervene and palmed the ball wide for a corner.
Chances became fewer as the second half progressed but on the 80th minutes substitute Mason Scamadin should have made it 2-1 when he blazed over from close range following Harling darting run into the box.
Wombwell decided to throw caution to the wind for the later stages of the game and it almost cost them as Leigh was forced to save again from a stinging effort a minute before the 90.
There was late hope for the Wellers two minutes into added time when a Harling corner was touched onto the near post for Scamadin to slide in and goal, but time was against them and three minutes later the referee blew the final whistle.
