SHCSL Division One - Tuesday 10th March - Denaby Main vs WTFC
Match Report: Davis Dramatics Denies Denaby
In a tightly fought encounter Wellers goalkeeper Jonathan Davis proved to be the hero as he shut out a determined Denaby Main side with several saves in the second half.
The action never really got going until the second half with the first 45 minutes fairly forgettable apart from one effort from Brad Kerr on 35 minutes where he forced Sam Brown into making a comfortable save.
Luke Norbury got the goalmouth action underway two minutes into the second half when he headed wide from debutante Matthew Outram's corner.
On 50 minutes Davis made his first big save of the evening when he palmed away a shot for corner.
Two minutes later at the other end and right back Chris Brynes played a superb ball to Kerr in the area who just got his angles wrong and fired wide.
The breakthrough came on 57 minutes via Byrnes who had just moved into midfield with the introduction of Jak Rennison a minute earlier.
In the build-up Norbury stole the ball from goalkeeper Brown who took the ball out of his area. The cross from the right wing found Luke Exley running into the box. Exley's first time shot smashed the crossbar and rebounded back out to Byrnes who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net from 13 yards.
Straight from the restart Denaby Main moved the ball quickly in order to find an equaliser and forced Davis to tip a shot onto the crossbar and over.
The Wellers almost doubled their lead on 71 minutes when another Outram corner was headed wide as it sailed by substitute Jake Bishop and Norbury.
Davis tipped the ball over the bar once more on 79 minutes and the resulting corner saw the Denaby man head wide at the far post.
A nervous last ten minutes saw bookings for Rennison and Bishop, but the league leaders held on to a valuable win and will go head-to-head against Denaby Main once more on Saturday.
