SHCSL Division One - Saturday 14th March - WTFC vs Denaby Main
Match Report: Determination Gives Wellers the Win
The Wellers are now just one win away from clinching the County Senior League Division One Title after a Brad Kerr brace gave them their second win in five days over Denaby Main.
An early decision on three minutes by referee Steven Grainger saw Kerr's penalty appeal waved away after he appeared to be taken down in the area on the home teams first attack of the day.
It quickly became clear that Kerr was going to be the catalyst in the game and saw a strike on 15 minutes fired straight at the keeper after an excellent forward ball by Jake Padgett found the striker on the edge of the box.
The first corner of the game for Wombwell Town saw George Westwood head over at the far post from Gareth McDermott's corner on 26 minutes and the pressure continued as another penalty appeal fell on deaf ears on 33 minutes after Will Harling was bundled over in the area.
Another chance fell to Kerr on 38 minutes, but this time his effort was screwed across the face of the goal and wide after some brilliant football was played by Padgett, Harling and Captain Luke Exley in the build up.
As half time approached Kerr grabbed his first goal as he escaped his marker as the ball came forward and a delicate shot over the keeper gave the Wellers a deserved first half lead.
With the game back underway it didn't take long for the advantage to be doubled.
Two minutes into the second half Kerr was on hand to tap home his second of the game after a great run by McDermott down the left saw the striker's shot parried at the near post straight to his teammate.
Denaby Main started to threaten the Wellers' goal and forced Jonathan Davis to make a diving save to his left on 53 minutes.
Kerr, looking for his hat trick, had chances on 57 and 60 minutes as Harling set him up on both occasions.
The first chance found the side netting from and acute angle while the second was saved by the keeper from the volley.
Two minutes later and Harling and Kerr combined once more as the ball was played across the box to the goalscorer who headed back into the centre of the box to set up Luke Norbury, who forced the keeper into making an awkward save which left him injured for a minute afterwards.
The game was petering down to its conclusion with just over ten minutes to go, but in the heat of the moment a tackle by Norbury was going to produce the first yellow card of the game.
However, the Denaby player didn't like the challenge and shoved Norbury away, which got a reaction from the striker who did the same and left the referee little option but to show the red card to both players.
