Pre-Season Friendly - Wednesday 2nd September - Thorncliffe U18 1, WTFC U19 3
Wombwell Town Under 19s continue to show improvement and promise and will take a lot of positives forward after beating a determined Thorncliffe U18 side at St George's Park.
With changing rooms closed players had to change into their kit in cars pre-game and this could have made the teenagers unsettled ahead of the game, but a good warm-up and tactical advise from the coaching team focused the large squad.
Thorncliffe's manager saw no problem in making the game less of a friendly and more a "welcome to youth football" as he instructed his team to go in heavy into challenges on the artificial pitch, but after a period of finding their feet the Wellers' U19s finally got the scoring going on 28 minutes.
Robbie Middleton-Wright made a darting run from right back to deliver a ball to Calum Smith in the box. Smith's shot was blocked, but fell kindly to Will Harling at the far post who set up Lucas Bell for a tap-in.
Three minutes later though and Thorncliffe were back on level terms. A fumble of the ball in defence saw the Thorncliffe youngster capitalise and beat Adam Greenwood 1-on-1.
An injury to C. Smith allowed Tom Croggon to get some minutes on the pitch and after some tactical and substitute changes in the second half it was the powerful forward who made it 2-1.
On 66 minutes the play was switched from left to right to find substitute Joe Wright who found Croggon onside inside the box and he made no mistake from a tight angle.
Thorncliffe began to wilt at this point as Wombwell Town's energy and pace failed to drop and on 71 minutes a deserved third goal was arguably the best finish of the night.
Wright was again involved on the right hand side and after the ball was partially cleared to the edge of the penalty area Harley Blankley was in the right place to smash the ball past the keeper.
Up next for the U19s is a home friendly against Ossett United U18s on home soil on Friday 4th September. Kick off should be 6:45pm but please check social media for a confirmed kick of time.
